Art is found everywhere and anywhere, individuals only need to look. Art is present in the blowing of the wind, movement of water, in the beauty of the Free State sun sets, the designing of clothes, even in the development of new technologies. The Visual Arts department at St Michael’s School aims to encourage learners to question current realities and find beauty in the world we live in, which is often difficult to find.

When learners are engaging in art; thought, self-inquiry, empathy, and discipline are required and thus encouraged. Visual arts provide a platform for the holistic development of learners. It promotes social skills and empathy that enhance the awareness and respect of others.

We celebrate individuality and stimulate the development of the learner’s creative world and identity. The projects that the learners are given, develop practical skills, visual literacy and observation.

Grade 10 -12 Visual Arts curriculum consists of firstly, Visual cultural Studies, which teaches students how to interpret, criticize, and use visual information, and thus create an informed opinion. Secondly, Practical Assessment Tasks (PAT’s) which is the conceptualization and creation of artworks.

Engagement in Visual Art stretches the minds of learners beyond what is found and find meaning in a space only creativity can offer.

John Updike said what art offers is space – a certain breathing room for the spirit.

 Benefits of Visual Art:

  • Perception and observation:to find beauty in the everyday and having a keen eye for detail.
  • Language Development: Use of descriptive words to discuss their own creations and discuss diverse artistic movements and styles.
  • Decision Making: Strengthens problem-solving and critical-thinking skills. The process of creating involves the constant experience of making decisions and choices which carries over into other parts of life.
  • Inventiveness: Learners that are encouraged to express themselves and take risks in creating art, develop a sense of innovation that will be important in their adult lives.
  • Awareness: As we live in an increasingly diverse society, art makes learners more aware of their environment and thus form an informed opinion of the world they form part of.
